I have been having an ongoing debate with one of my colleagues at work about Twitter. I am hoping that my followers and fellow users can help me settle the argument for good.
I am of the opinion that a large following that is engaging a little with you is better than a small engaged audience, for traffic generation and awarness. I will explain more below:
My argument
I have a business twitter account (@BPDwebsite) that I run for my company with 787 followers and even this relatively small number is near impossible to engage with on a consistent basis. I would imagine that those people who have 10,000 followers plus would engage with no more than 50-60 a month in a meaningful direct manner.
I would expect that these people have a high following because they Tweet high quality content to their users so there value to their users is an information source.
My colleagues argument
My colleague also runs a twitter account for the business (@TSPGroupEditor) has 113 followers and he engages with them regularly they are a good mix of professional and personal. Contacts in his account.
The Account Stats
The Retweet and mentions are from the 23rd January to the 23rd June. I only took over the BPD account 4 weeks ago and 80% of the interactions occurred since I have been managing the account.
Tweets – 262
Following – 154
Followers – 113
Retweets – 11
Mentions – 43
Tweets – 704
Following – 872
Followers – 787
Retweets – 14
Mentions – 57
It is clear to me that both accounts have limited interaction with their users as the Retweets and Mentions are low for both accounts as a comparison one of my personal account’s (@BuildProdMarket) has had 54 mentions and 7 retweets in the last 2 days, this account has a following of 885 and has sent 1,393 tweets in 5 months.
So my question is which is the best method of generating click through’s retweets and engagement is it best to keep it small or to actively build your following. I will state now I do not use automated follower programs I much prefer to build my following organically after an initial push.
P.S. Please let me know your thoughts below, I am trying to educate my company and I need your help.
